What we want to do
We want to complete theses upgrades:
- Improve the access from the street
- Refit the kitchen so that we can provide cooking facilities to enable children to develop healthy living capabilities
- Upgrade the toilets to provide easier access for mobility impaired people along with improved shower facilities.
- Provide safe storage for cleaning and other chemicals
- Repair and decorate the main hall
Improvements that we have completed have already improved the way in which groups operate. The Friendship Group uses our second room now it can be accessed from the main hall (rather than through a store room) for quiet activities. The crossover between section meetings is easier as the incoming section prepare in the second room.
The improvements we intend to complete will enable a wider range of uses for the Hall. We will promote the resource through our website and through our current users.
Why we need to upgrade our accommodation
We need to upgrade the facilities to ensure that those who use it are safe. Our current kitchen is difficult to keep clean. It has units that are well over 20 years old and the cooking facilities are of a similar age. Our intention is that the updated kitchen will be more useful to our young people and can thus contribute to our work on healthy lifestyles
We are concerned that, for example, the shower unit does not meet current health and safety standards in terms of scalding risk and disease prevention. By replacing the toilets, we can reduce our water consumption.
We want to improve access to the Hall from outside for people with mobility restrictions. The path from the curtilage is cracked and there is an inadequate ramp into the building. Further, it is restricted in width by two low walls. We want to make the path incline to the entrance smoothly and widen it to reduce crowding. These improvements will make access easier and improve the appearance of the Hall which will benefit the immediate neighbourhood.
We need to ensure our storage of cleaning materials is safe, given the number of young people using our building. Gymani currently has to store a considerable volume of equipment in a room that is difficult to access. By providing better storage for bulk items, we will be able to make better use of the space that is currently used for storage.
Working with our users
We have spoken to the groups who use the hall. For example, the organiser for the friendship group has commented on the access.
When we want to complete these repairs
We plan to use the summer holiday period 2014 to complete these improvements.
