Pitching the Marquee

Our Marquee is of an unknown age, but we suspect it dates from the early 70s. It was made by the Bradford Cover and Tent Co who are still in business and have provided us with spares for some of our dining shelters

This page is designed to show you how we pitch it, in what we believe is the safest and easiest way.

Stage 1: The Roof

First lay the roof section out on the floor, in the location you want the marquee to end up.

NOTE: The edges/sides of the marquee are different. One edge has 'Three' poles between the corners, and the other has 'Four' poles between the corners, and is easily seen from the eyelets along the edges. So, take care to position the sides so that you have the door in the correct place. It's far easier to rotate the roof section now than later.

Stage 2

Next fit the corner poles and peg them out with the 'double' guy ropes as shown here.

Stage 3

Then, slot the two pieces of the large centre pole together and, from underneath, push the spike through the centre hole of the roof section. At this point place the main guy ropes over the spike.

TIP: the person fitting the guy ropes might want to temporarily loosen the corner poles either side of them to make it easier to reach the spike.

Stage 4

Raise the centre pole up to the vertical and secure the main guy ropes at each corner as shown here. They should follow the line of the corner seams as much as possible and should not touch the roof.

Stage 5

Fit the remaining side poles and secure them with the single guy ropes.

This is a good opportunity to install the contents of the marquee, such as tables etc.

(You can see from this picture that the nearest edge has Four poles between the corners, and the edge to the left has Three. This is mirrored on each opposite edge)

Stage 6

Next fit the side walls.

The side wall comes in two equal sections. They are fitted with small hooks at the top which attach to a piece of string that is sewn into the edge of the roof section. You should start where you want the door and work your way around - making sure it is as tight as possible as you go.

Finally, secure the base of the side walls with small pegs through the brailing loops.

Taking it down is the complete reversal of putting it up BUT care should be taken with the main centre pole as it is very heavy.
