Troop Events On This page: Pictures from Troop Nights - Spring 2003 |
The New Year started well with a catapult competition. Each Patrol was given the same amount of poles, rope and time. Seen here constructing their weapons are some of the Patrols.
The following week we enjoyed a relatively warm evening, though with a bit of rain, trying to float candles across Wire Mill Dam. Unfortunately as it was so dark the pictures were not clear enough to place here.
The last meeting of January provided the first opportunity of the year to practice some cooking. 'Make it like mother' required the Scouts to make a treacle tart each. A very messy evening as you might expect, with flour and syrup finding itself all over the place. Fortunately enough of the raw material found its way in to the oven and Dave & Ruth voted the best examples as shown in the picture below.
Note the flour over the shirt! One working hard, the others looking on!

A very interesting speaker visited in early February who told us all about how she helps those in Sheffield who are homeless. The evening involved spending 10 minutes outside in -2.5 deg C for 15 minutes to get an idea of what life is like without a permanent home. Finally the Scouts had a go at making a shelter out of cardboard, followed by a welcome mug of soup to end the evening.
A very easy night in the middle of February when we visited the Sheffield Ski Village and spent an hour Tobogganing. A great night which left many soaking wet as the slide had to be soaked with water to help the sledges 'fly!'.
A regular feature of the spring term is the Dump Hike. Here the Scouts are split into age groups and dropped at various locations where they have to use their navigation skills to find their way to the pick up point (With leaders following at a discrete distance). Despite Minus 4 deg C temperatures they all made it home safely.
A new experience for the Scouts after Half Term was an explosive obstacle course, designed by Ruth. Here the scouts were given a sensitive load that had to be carried around a string trail. If the Patrol failed to keep the load level, it would explode!!!. Seen here below in mid route, only one Patrol managed to complete the course without an explosion.
One theme present in this terms programme is cooking, and during March the Scouts took on the challenge of cooking a meal based on a chosen country. The standard was high and most managed to create a dish from basic materials rather than from pre processed packets.

The term ended with an old favourite, Backwoods Cooking at Lodge Moor. Here we help reduce the locals garden rubbish and cook on open fires out in the country !
The Scouts brought and cooked toasted sandwiches, sausages, and sweet apples. As far as I know no one missed school the next day with food poisoning.
