After a good night's sleep it was a quick but full breakfast, then with sandwiches made it was off to Coniston to climb 'The Old Man' which provided plenty of jokes about leaders! We'd heard them all before but we laughed politely.
The day was bright and sunny, and quite warm out of the wind. We split up into two groups this year, with the senior patrol taking a slightly longer route with Paul and Jeremy, that took them along the Walna Scar Road and eventually over Dow Crag.

The rest of us followed the tried and tested route that goes up by Goat Water. The steepest bit is just after this lake and it can be seen in the distance in this picture. After lunch we made it to the summit and waited for the senior patrol to arrive a few minutes later. And to prove we all got there - here we are.

A few hundred feet below the summit is a deep
tarn called Low Water. This is one of the Troop's favourite places as they all
seem to enjoy the seemingly sub zero temperature and swim out to the rocks a few
feet from the shore. It takes a while to get into this tarn because it is so
cold, and there is visible relief when they get out on the rock to warm up - the
problem is they then realise that they have no choice but to go through it again
to get back, and many decide the only way is to jump for it.
They tell me it's fun. I'll take their word for it. |

After returning to camp for tea we had a wide game called 'evasion' where the scouts have to get to a lamp in the middle of the field without being caught in the high power spot lamps.
