142nd Troop Camp 2006 - Cumbria

Today we had booked a session of Canoeing with a company called Summitreks, based in Coniston. However before that the Morning was spent learning a few basic Scouting skills in the shape of Shelter building and pioneering.
Another
tradition of Fulwood camps is to build a shelter to sleep in on the last night.
This year tarpaulins were going to be used so the Scouts experimented with
different ways of using a Tarp for a shelter. Here the Scouts have used a rope
between two trees and made a simple tent structure. They also managed to
construct a shelter using a branch as a ridge pole, by attaching one point to a
tree trunk, and by using a wall to lean it against.
The
pioneering was in the shape of raft building, which of course were launched on
the Tarn below the camp site. For some this was their first experience of
lashing poles together.
We have adopted large bamboo poles for this as we find they provide better buoyancy, and are lighter to transport.
As
mentioned earlier, the afternoon was spent on Coniston Water with Summitreks
Ltd, who provided instruction and some games in canoes.
Of course it was also another excuse for the Scouts to fall into some water.
