Scout Report

Monday, That Old Man.

It's a tradition now that on the Monday we go for a hike up The Old Man Of Coniston. This is a fairly easy climb that takes us to 803m above sea level.

Well at least some were still smiling before we set off.

The walk started with a bit of welcome cloud cover, however it wasn't long before the sun had broken through and we were walking in very hot conditions - most unlike the Lake District in Summer.

By the time we reached Goat Tarn there was only one thing to do - collapse and have a drink. Strangely non of the Scouts jumped into the tarn, although they were aware that another one awaited on the other side of the summit.

We also decided to have lunch here, then it was onwards and upwards, and just under an hour later we were on the summit looking across to Lake Windermere in one direction and to Morecambe Bay in the other.

Having reached the top, the only way is down. And 250m down the hill is Fulwood Scout Troop's Summer swimming pool, otherwise known as Low Water. A Tarn that is normally so cold even Polar Bears shiver when they dip their toes in. However this year, after two weeks of continuing heat wave it was even warm enough for me to take the plunge - after this picture was taken of course.

For the record, a picture does exist of me in the water but that will only be available to the highest bidder.
