Scout Report

Sunday, settling in

A relaxing morning, well it is Sunday, spent consolidating the sites and unpacking the final bits and pieces. One patrol even started to build a bivouac in anticipation of the last night (so organised, can they be Scouts?)

After lunch we took a gentle walk down the valley to the Sygun Copper Mine which is about a mile down the valley. After an ice cream we then continued on down the valley beside the river to Beddgelert where there were more shops selling ice cream! as seen here.

The Scouts were then given the task of finding out what the name Beddgelert means. It’s a long story but it’s all to do with a chap who mistakenly killed his dog for killing his son, only to find that the dog had killed the wolf that had killed his son. Boy meets girl, girl hates boy, blah blah blah… Chap buries dog (Gelert) big ceremony, much wailing etc…. Village springs up around grave hence name (final resting place of Gelert). Won’t be long before Hollywood catches on!

Having successfully discovered the potted history of the village we then set off back towards the camp, one hour away, and guess what – it started to rain!

With the clouds leaking the evening was spent in the marquee with a quiz and telling jokes (the ones about girls with very fair hair were the funniest – where do the Scouts find them?).

And finally, during the customary Cake and Bog Wash (Drinking chocolate to the uninitiated) we had a reading from Baden Powell’s Scouting for Boys. Now how many Troops do that these days?
