Scout Report

Friday, Sports Day

The day started a bit later than normal. After all the walking that the Scouts did yesterday we let them sleep in for a few extra minutes.

The morning saw the start of the Camp Olympics, which included the following events.

The Big Slide

This included time trials to see how fast individuals could slide down it, as well as the number of times the entire patrol could slide down it in 2 minutes, and finally how many times the patrol could walk up it in 2 minutes.

The River Race

This was a variation of our Porter Water Relay, however this time each scout ran individually up the stream that flows through the site. Starting from the bottom of the field they had to negotiate thick bracken and overhanging trees until they reached the top dam that they had made earlier in the week. I'm not sure how far it was but times ranged from just under 4 minutes to about 15 minutes !

Raft Race

During the week both patrols made rafts. The competition here was to see if they floated and could be controlled. The winners were the Dragons (on the right) as the Bio Disposables were left sitting on the river bed.

Dutch Arrows

Each Scout made their own 'dutch arrow', a short stick whittled to a point at one end with flights fitted to the other. With two objectives, 1) to throw it the furthest and, 2) to make it land the closest to a post about 40 meters away down the hill.

Cross Country

There was also a cross country race that followed a flour trail set by Dave. This took the Scouts around the farm land until it reached a remote spot where they had to make their own route back to camp - if they new where they were!

Sam here showing that there is only one way to cool off after a camp olympics.

The eventual winners of the Camp Olympics were the Bio Disposables who won four of the seven events.

The rest of the afternoon was used to finish the bivouac in which both patrols had decided to sleep for the last night, and the evening was spent, traditionally, around the main campfire with a few more jokes etc and yes, that Scouting For Boys book again – what an education they have had this year.
