Day 2, Where are we?

After a first day of setting up camp and settling in, we spent the morning having a walk around.

The campsite was situated below Holme Fell and we decided that a walk all the way around it would be a useful way to discover more about the surroundings we would be in for the next week.

Not far from the site is an old flooded slate quarry, called Hodge Close. As we were passing we decided that the climb down what looked like a couple of hundred feet (and back up again) was worth the effort. The final part of the decent took us through a man made tunnel as can be seen here.

I would like to have been able to tell you what we did in the afternoon, however no matter how much I try I just can't remember! Perhaps the effects of too much beef over the years. I think that the Scouts occupied themselves by making camp gadgets, which included a large totem pole with two Sheep Skulls on top, which gave one Patrol its name 'The Rams'. The other Patrol spent most of its time trying to empty the wood of all its dead offerings for the fires and provided a constant shower of wood over the wall, and guess what! Their Patrol name became 'The Woodchucks'.

For the record the members of each patrol were:

The Rams

The Woodchucks
Tom Lomas

John Bedford

Jeremy Walker

David Beard

Jack Ryan

Mark Turk

Jeff Pawsey

Drew Drake

Julian Beard

Peter Turk

Edward McCulloch

Donald Bennet

Before I forget, it would be unwise of me not to make a big mention of our resident 'chef' Jonathan. And when I say big well the picture here has not been tampered with, he really is that tall. A trained surgeon by day, he comes out to play with his knives at camp and produces some amazing meals for the leaders. Thanks Jon.
