142nd Troop Camp Report 2000 - Walesby
14th to 16th July
Put together in just three weeks, this is the brief
account of what
happened
Home Friday Saturday Sunday Tom
Arriving at 7pm, we quickly found a suitable site, away
from the Cubs!, and pitched the tents.
After a brief flag break we had a short wide game followed
by a briefing of the weekend's activities.
The two main aims of the camp were to gain the Athlete's
badges and the Camp Cook's badge.
With Two Patrols, it was easy to split them into groups to
assist 'Dusty' Litchfield in the cook tent. Dusty, a well known
fixture at Cub Camps, was able to teach the Scouts all the necessary
requirements to complete their badges, such as camp cleanliness, and
how to decide when to start cooking various items in time for 50
hungry
Cubs.
Patrol 1 were on Breakfast duty so had to be up and
washed ready to prepare breakfast for 8am.
Patrol 2 were able to have half an hour extra lay in until
breakfast was ready??
The mornings activity, after washing up etc, was to
undertake and hopefully gain either the Athletes Stage 1 or Stage 2
badge. With the large open space at Walesby this would be fairly
easy to do.
We decided to test the Scouts on Cricket Ball throwing, 100m
run, and the long jump.
A successful morning resulted in 9 stage 1 and 6 stage 2
badges being gained.
Patrol 2 had the pleasure of preparing Lunch whilst Patrol 1
were able to have a go at one of the Cub activities such as the
climbing wall or archery.
After lunch was bivouac building, and this had to be good as
the Scouts were to spend the night in their creations.
The evening meal was a new experience for all the Scouts as
they were introduced to cooking on an open fire.
After the meal and clearing up, a game of football around the entire camp site left some very tired Scouts ready for bed in their bivouacs.
After a good nights sleep, both Patrols found
themselves in the cook tent bright and early.
The morning was spent 'demolishing' the bivouacs and
restoring the woods to their former state.
Due to the very hot weather the hike to a local place of
interest was replaced with a wander around Walesby Forest following
one of the many treasure hunts set out by the camp centre.
Both Patrols helped produce the Sunday Lunch for the Cubs
and then proceeded to take down all 10 stormhavens which had been
used by the Cubs.
By which time it was time to go home, as parents had
arrived. Apparently many Scouts were asleep before the vehicles they
were travelling in had reached the main road.
There is always next year. Hopefully we will be able to plan a camp that lasts a whole week next.
Friday 14th July
When we arrived at Walesby on the 14th July we pitched
our tents and sorted our luggage out. Then we had a talk on the
weekends activities. After that we had a game of cricket for the
rest of the evening before supper and then it was bedtime. (On
Friday night the cub's flag went missing but I don't know anything
about that !!)
Saturday 15th July
I was in Patrol 1 and they had to
help with the breakfast preparation. We prepared breakfast for the
Scouts, Cubs, Leaders and helpers. Once breakfast was over we had an
inspection.
For the rest of the morning we did the Athletes
Badge. It consisted of running and throwing. It was possible to get
a stage 1 or stage 2 depending on how old you were and the
attainment that was achieved.
Then we were given free
time.
After lunch we set to work building bivouacs. These are
shelters between trees that can be slept in. We made these out of
tall bracken. This job took the majority of the afternoon.
Then
it was time to prepare the open fires for cooking our evening meal
on. We cooked and ate our evening meal and then it was time to put
the finishing touches to our bivouacs.
At 7.45pm it was time for
the camp fire. The Scouts had a choice of whether they went to it or
not. The ones that didn't played football with the leaders. (The
leaders won !). When the Cubs got back from the camp fire they had a
game of cricket. The Scouts had free time.
At 10pm it was supper
time and at 10.30 it was bedtime.
Sunday 16th July
On Sunday it was our turn to get up
late. We had breakfast and then it was time to demolish the
bivouacs.
Then we had refreshments and we took down our
tents.
At 12.00 it was our turn to prepare lunch for everybody.
We cooked burgers and hotdogs.
Once lunch was over it was time to
take down the cub tents. For some this was a challenging task
because they were so big. (I think he means the tents!)
At 3pm
the parents arrived and at 3.30pm it was time to go home.
